Fanmix: Russia's Greatest Love Machine (#3 of 4!)
Title: Russia's Greatest Love Machine
Disclaimer: Files are still mp3s of varying (mostly low/medium) quality and are meant for previewing purposes. If you like a song, check out the artist and support them! If it's possible, I mean. Some of these songs are harder to find than others.
Notes: I noticed, after putting the finishing touches on this list, that there was a definite split in style and in the kinds of artists I was choosing. That is, Napoleon's list contains a lot more stuff that you could see your dad listening to (or your mom... someone's parents, anyway). And by "you," of course, I mean me (but not my dad, because I know what he listens to). But on Illya's, almost all of it is by recent artists. The oldest track is the one I got the title from. Anyway, it just tickled me that I went for a younger, more counter-culture/indie sound in this mix, while Napoleon's was a bit more classic/rock/pop.

Also, where Napoleon's was mean, Illya's is cynical. Plus, Illya gets a bonus advertisement image. The cd art is under the cut.

To Russia My Homeland
[... And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead]
Obviously picked for the title, in part, but also for the fast and yet still rather dreamy quality. It's a great little song.

[Instrumental]

Communist Daughter
[Neutral Milk Hotel]
Another somewhat dreamy tune about national origins. Sort of. (I really love Neutral Milk Hotel, so I was like "Oh god, I can't not use this song.")

Sweet communist,
the communist daughter
standing on the sea-weed water
semen stains the mountain top
semen stains the mountain tops
with coca leaves along the border
sweetness sings from every corner
cars careening from the clouds
the bridges burst and twist around

East Infection
[Gogol Bordello]
Ah, Illya. He's his own little east infection.

To protect this generation
From the raging East infection
Market another British invasion
Or 80-th regurgitation
Or more cultural inbreeding
Or more garbage prefeeding
To protect this generation
From the east infection!

Baby, I'm An Anarchist!
[Against Me!]
I like the idea of quiet political revolutionary Illya. He may not be an anarchist, but I imagine him being just as strident and critical in his opinions. Just, you know, a little more quietly.

Through the best of times,
Through the worst of times,
Through Nixon and through Bush,
Do you remember '36?
We went our separate ways.
You fought for Stalin.
I fought for freedom.
You believe in authority.
I believe in myself.
I'm a Molotov cocktail.
You're Dom Perignon.

Academy Fight Song
[Mission of Burma]
I guess I think of Illya as a more military person than Napoleon? I don't really have a firm grasp on why this is, precisely (I mean, I know Napoleon was in the Korean war or whatever). But this song has that strong foundation of self-criticism and self-protection, which is more Illya.

Maybe you're right
I shouldn't judge
What's wrong or right
This is too much
I'm not judging you, I'm judging me
My academy
Your academy

Exhuming McCarthy
[R.E.M.]
I'm really not sure whether this is Illya criticizing aspects of the U.S. or whether it's a more Westernized Illya criticizing himself. Either way...

You're beautiful, more beautiful than me
You're honorable, more honorable than me
Loyal to the Bank of America

Blondes
[Everclear]
I used to be a big Everclear fan. And, I don't know. Blondes, okay.

I see you dying in the highway
I see you climbing up the hill
I see the sunshine on your blonde hair
I see you worshiping the thrill

I Wanna Look Like A Tiger
[SoKo]
So, this is a song about wanting to look big and fierce when, in reality, you're small and cute and the world is unfair. Yes, it makes me think of Illya, because that poor boy is never going to escape how darn cute he is. (And I sympathize.)

If you wanna be respected you have to prove that you're the stronger
And if you wanna be the stronger you have to stop trusting anyone
And if you're not trusting anyone you're going to end up with no friends
And if you end up with no friends you're gonna feel so lonely

[...]

Oh my little Soko, you have to stop being so naive
You should be wise and understand that life's a bitch
Life's a bitch!

So now
I wanna look like a tiger
I wanna look like a tiger
I wanna look like a tiger with a tail

But he said I look like a baby cat
He said I look like a baby cat
He said I look like a baby cat with a baby tail

Half A Person
[The Smiths]
This is another one of those songs where it feels really relevant, but if I try to explain why I feel like an idiot. I don't know. Illya spending his life on people's trails and being liked more when he's poor.

Call me morbid, call me pale
I've spent six years on your trail
Six full years of my life on your trail
And if you have five seconds to spare
Then I'll tell you the story of my life:
Sixteen, clumsy and shy
I went to London and I
I booked myself in at the Y.W.C.A
I said: "I like it here - can I stay?”

Rasputin
[Boney M]
Okay, yeah, this is mostly on here because I get such a kick out of calling Illya "Russia's greatest love machine." And it's a fun song.

RA RA RASPUTIN
Lover of the Russian queen
They didn't quit, they wanted his head
RA RA RASPUTIN
Russia's greatest love machine
And so they shot him till he was dead

Gronlandic Edit
[of Montreal]
A song that addresses both Illya as a scientist (so to speak) and Illya's (presumed) atheism. I don't think I can recall coming across a really positive atheist character in a series or in fandom before. I'm not exactly surprised, I guess. I mean, I know we aren't well-liked (or understood, often). Still.

I guess it would be nice to give my heart to a god
But which one, which one do I choose?
All the churches fill with losers, psycho or confused
I just want to hold the divine in mind
And forget all of the beauty's wasted

Let's fall back to earth and do something pleasant
We fell back to earth like gravity's bitches
(Physics makes us all its bitches)

Bulletproof ... I Wish I Was
[Radiohead]
I'm sure he does wish this.

Limb by limb and tooth by tooth
Tearing up inside of me
Every day, every hour
Wish that I was bulletproof

Sleeping With A Gun Under My Pillow
[The Boy Least Likely To]
Awwwww, Illya. :(

Sometimes it gets lonely
Being valiantly alone.
Sometimes I wish I was there with you.
I get sad just thinking
Of all the little things
I never ever had the heart to do.

That's When I Reach For My Revolver
[Moby]
But Illya isn't exactly given to lengthy bouts of self-pity, so...

Once I had my heroes
Once I had my dreams
But all of that is changed now
The truth begins again
The truth is not that comfortable, no
Mother taught us patience
The virtues of restraint
Father taught us boundaries
The knowledge we must go
I'm trying to protect my unity

That's when I reach for my revolver

Shy Kind Of Guy
[Gogol Bordello]
Introverted Illya. Pretty obvious. Yes, two Gogol Bordello songs for Illya. Because Gypsy punk just suits him well.

And only yesterday you thought
You were Peter The Great
With all, all your troops.
And only yesterday you thought
Your name shall be carved in stone.
But how slowly goes the night
For a shy kind of guy
That you have become tonight.
You've never been
In this room of your mind.

Sports And Wine
[Ben Folds Five]
This kind of leads into the next track, but also it's interesting. I tend to see Illya as the more masculine of the two, but then I guess I think there's also a lot of macho posturing that he wouldn't have the patience to put up with.

The girls don't understand it
Anything you say
And I don't understand it either
Guess that makes me gay

Real Men
[Tori Amos]
This is a really good song that I only realized was really good when I looked up the lyrics--for a long time it was just one of those songs I always half-listened to. But she really nails a lot of the contradictions and bittersweet aspects of gay male culture and the problems of gender roles and relations between the larger culture and the subculture. And yes, I guess I'm assuming gay!Illya... or sexually-ambiguous!Illya, if you prefer that.

Time to get scared
Time to change plan
Don't know how to treat a lady
Don't know how to be a man
Time to admit
What you call defeat
'Cause there's women running past you now
And you just drag your feet

The Bagman's Gambit
[The Decemberists]
For the lost love back in the old country. I don't know if it's cheating or just me having to brag about my cleverness, but I should point out that this song refers directly back to the Decemberists song that I put on Spy Guys. Actually, both Napoleon and Illya's mixes refer back to Spy Guys, in some of the artists picked and in the cover art. It's not glaringly obvious, but it was intentional, so there you go.

It was late one night
I was awoken by the telephone
I heard a strangled cry on the end of the line
Purloined in Petrograd
They were suspicious of where your loyalties lay
So I paid off a bureaucrat
To convince your captors there to secret you away

And at the gate of the embassy
Our hands met through the bars
As your whisper stilled my heart
"No, they'll never catch me now
No, they'll never catch me
No, they cannot catch me now
We will escape somehow
Somehow"

I Must Belong Somewhere
[Bright Eyes]
Illya decides he belongs in New York, I guess. But it's not really a happy song; like a lot of the other ones, it's very cynical and that's really why I like it. And why I like it for Illya.

Leave the secret talk on the trundle bed.
Leave the garden tools in the rusted shed.
Leave those bad ideas in your troubled head today.

Leave the restless ghost in his old hotel.
Leave the homeless man in his cardboard cell.
Let the painted horse on the carousel remain.

Cause everything must belong somewhere.
Just like the gold around your finger and the silver in his hair.
Yeah, everything must belong somewhere.
I know that now, that's why I'm staying here.
I know that now, that's why I'm staying here.

I could swear I commented on this when I downloaded it this morning...it's great! Thanks for posting.

Did you photoshop the cover or is there seriously a picture out there of Illya pointing his gun at a small dog? (the fact that I have to ask speaks volumes about why I love this show).
DrWorm: russia's greatest love machinedrworm on August 6th, 2008 12:15 am (UTC)
Ahahaha, I only wish I had come up with that! All I did in Photoshop was touch up some of the more glaring effects of .jpg compression. It is a real picture. In fact, there are several pictures of him with that dog. And they are all amazing.

Bonus: Robert Vaughn with a lion.

Sorry this reply is rather late...
Thank you very much! :D I'm always happy to hear that someone somewhere is liking these things! They've been a lot more work than I initially expected, so... yeah. Fun, but I'll still be pleased when I wrap up the last one.

I'm a new fan to MFU (why, oh why, can't it be October!) and the ever, ever lovely I.K. (and DMc's various alter egos), and this looks like a brilliant mix! Can't wait to give it a listen, and hope that it helps in some fic writing at some point when life and academia allow. Thank you so much!
